Viva Carpal Tunnel Assessment

Tingling, numbness, pain, or weakness in the hand can interfere with sleep, work, and simple daily tasks. Carpal tunnel syndrome involves pressure on the median nerve at the wrist, but similar symptoms can come from other nerve or musculoskeletal problems.

About this program

A useful assessment reviews which fingers are affected, when symptoms occur, whether you drop objects, and whether weakness is increasing. It also considers previous injuries, medicines, and relevant health conditions. Examination findings guide whether additional testing would help; an electrical nerve test is not automatically required for every person.

Selected care options can include a wrist splint, activity adjustments, and discussion of other treatments. An injection may offer symptom relief for some people but should not be described as a lasting solution. The AAOS guideline does not support shockwave as a treatment that improves long-term patient-reported outcomes for this condition.

Persistent numbness, increasing weakness, or muscle wasting needs timely specialty evaluation. This programme does not establish onsite nerve testing or hand surgery. Request an assessment through the main Viva Centers appointment page, bring prior reports, and confirm provider, testing location, procedure availability, and cost before nonurgent care.

Frequently asked questions

Does hand tingling always mean carpal tunnel?

No. The symptom pattern and examination help distinguish wrist nerve compression from other causes.

Do I need electrical nerve testing before my first visit?

Not automatically. Your provider decides whether additional testing would clarify the diagnosis or treatment plan.

Can a wrist splint help?

It may be an option for selected symptoms. Discuss fit, timing, and follow-up rather than assuming it suits every problem.

Are injections a lasting solution?

Not necessarily. They may provide symptom relief, but AAOS guidance does not support long-term improvement from corticosteroid injection.

Is shockwave routine treatment for carpal tunnel?

This programme does not present it as routine care. AAOS reports no improvement in long-term patient-reported outcomes from shockwave.

When is specialty review important?

Increasing weakness, muscle wasting, persistent numbness, or symptoms that continue despite appropriate care need timely specialist assessment.

What can a nerve conduction study show?

A nerve conduction study assesses how electrical signals travel through a nerve and can help clarify the pattern or severity of compression. Results are interpreted with your symptoms and examination. If testing is recommended, confirm the outside service, preparation instructions, and cost; this page does not establish onsite testing.

What should I bring when weakness affects my work?

Bring prior reports and describe tasks that have become difficult, objects you drop, when numbness occurs, and whether weakness is increasing. These details help identify changes in function and priorities for the plan. Increasing weakness or muscle wasting needs timely assessment rather than waiting to complete a symptom diary.

Urgent symptoms

  • Call 911 for sudden arm weakness with facial droop or trouble speaking
  • A major wrist injury with deformity or a cold, pale hand needs emergency assessment
  • Seek prompt assessment for increasing grip weakness or persistent numbness

Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.

When we refer

Progressive weakness, muscle wasting, or persistent sensory loss needs timely hand or nerve specialty review. Existing Viva neurology information describes surgical release and electrical nerve testing as referrals; confirm receiving services.
